Amazon King Workshop and Internship Programs

As the Peruvian Amazon Jungle becomes more known through out the world for its biodiversity and un-discovered species, ranging from rare birds to un-known mammals.  At Amazon King, we have seen an opportunity to offer specialized programs that are designed for undergraduates seeking first hand experience within their related fields of study.  Our internship and workshop programs offer unique opportunities in the fields of hospitality and lodging, cultural studies, anthropology, biology, ornithology, ichthyology, and tourism to undergraduate students from all over the world.  We strive to provide a great and unforgettable experience for our Alumni, full of fantastic adventures and a better understanding of the biggest influences on the world's fragile eco-system - the Amazon Rainforest. These programs will be headed by a scientific adviser and field coordinator.  For more information regarding our internship and workshop programs please email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Scientific Adviser:  Roosevelt Garcia-Villacorta

Roosevelt is a tropical biologist born in Iquitos, the capital of the Peruvian Amazon. He holds a Masters degree from the University of Missouri, Saint-Louis, where he did his thesis researching the diversity patterns of trees in the Peruvian Amazon. Roosevelt has traveled as a researcher to remote places in the Amazon jungle, and most recently he was part of two expeditions along with scientists of the Museum Field (Chicago) that catalogued the diversity of plants and animals in the Putumayo and Napo basins in Peru (featured here: http://scientistatwork.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/29/a-botanical-sketch-in-progress/. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and has described a new species of tree from the endemic white-sand forests. When Roosevelt is not doing fieldwork he is a bio-business entrepreneur who likes to experiment how to bring the wonders of the Amazon ecosystems closer to the general public, and at the same time contributing to its conservation. He is committed to provide scientific advice to the Amazon King’s Internship Program and to oversee the logistics in Peru.

Field Coordinator:  Alex Shoer

Alex is an avid adventure traveler, always looking for new experiences, he has traveled to over 30 countries on five continents (you can follow his travels on his blog www.thirtydollarday.com). But don't let his outward appearance and extra-curricular activities fool you, he is passionate about small business development and hopes to one day run his own. His background is in banking and finance.  He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors of Business Administration in finance and worked at State Street Bank, in Boston, MA.  He has also worked with online marketing in a number of capacities at Creative Word and Image, with Squashibility.org and with Zara Tours in Moshi, Tanzania.  Recently, he made the leap to more alternative ventures, the Amazon King Lodge being one of them. Alex is working on Amazon King Lodge's online marketing strategy and helping to create a summer internship program that will bring American students to the Amazonian jungle for a rewarding summer: being immersed in the local culture, working on community development projects, creating online content: video, photos, blogs and the rest, all while experiencing the Amazon first hand.
